Hawkes Bay/Wellington

Hawkes Bay is known for Art Deco Napier, prestigious wines, and the spectacular gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. Wellington blends a cultural capital with film history, and nearby Wairarapa offers boutique wine, charming towns & dramatic coastlines.

Hawke’s Bay, on the sunny east coast of the North Island, is known for its world‑class wine, Art Deco architecture, coastal scenery, and relaxed pace.  The city of Napier is internationally famous for its remarkably preserved Art Deco architecture, rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1931.

Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s oldest and one of its most prestigious wine regions, frequently compared to Bordeaux for its climate and red‑wine styles. The area around Napier, Hastings, and Havelock North is dotted with cellar doors and vineyard restaurants, making wine tasting a centerpiece activity. Guided tours are offered, self‑drive between wineries, or cycle through the vineyards on flat, scenic trails. Well‑known estates such as Mission Estate, Te Mata, and Craggy Range combine tastings with vineyard views and dining opportunities.

At the southern end of the bay, Cape Kidnappers is home to one of the largest mainland gannet colonies in the world. Guided overland or beach‑based tours allow visitors to get close to thousands of nesting seabirds perched on dramatic coastal cliffs.

The Wellington region combines a compact, culture‑rich capital city with coastal scenery, wildlife, film history, and one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions just over the hill in Wairarapa. Te Papa is consistently rated as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s best museums and is a must‑visit for understanding New Zealand’s history, Māori culture, and natural environment. The historic Wellington Cable Car links downtown Lambton Quay with the Botanic Gardens and offers sweeping harbor views along the way. Just minutes from the city center, Zealandia is a fully fenced urban wildlife sanctuary offering rare opportunities to see native birds such as kākā and tīeke in a natural setting. Wellington is the heart of New Zealand’s film industry. Tours of Wētā Workshop reveal behind‑the‑scenes craftsmanship from films like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar.

Just over the Remutaka Hill, about an hour from Wellington, Wairarapa offers a complete change of pace with vineyards, historic towns, and striking coastal scenery. Martinborough is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated boutique wine regions, especially renowned for pinot noir. The village is laid out around a central square, with many cellar doors within walking or cycling distance. Nearby Greytown is a charming town known for its preserved Victorian architecture, boutique shopping, and food scene.

For dramatic scenery, the Wairarapa coast delivers. Highlights include Cape Palliser Lighthouse, the southernmost lighthouse on the North Island, accessible via a steep stair climb and nearby fur seal colonies along a rugged shoreline. Wairarapa is part of an International Dark Sky Reserve, offering excellent conditions for stargazing.
