Up Close and Personal: Native Kiwi Bird

Country New Zealand

Sparky is a North Island brown kiwi and one of the most special residents of the Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei, Northland. Injured as a chick after losing part of a leg to a trap, Sparky is unable to survive in the wild and now lives permanently at the centre. Today, he serves as an ambassador for his species, helping visitors of all ages understand both the vulnerability of New Zealand’s native birds and the vital role of conservation.

Meet Sparky and spend time with the devoted team behind the Native Bird Recovery Centre, led by Robert and Robyn, whose lives have been dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and rehabilitating sick and injured birds — with the ultimate goal of returning as many as possible safely back to the wild.

Sparky is one of the very few Kiwi in New Zealand that visitors can see — and gently touch — during daylight. Most kiwi encounters take place in nocturnal houses, making this an exceptionally rare and deeply personal connection with the country’s most iconic bird. Equally moving is the opportunity to meet the passionate team at the Centre, whose work is driven not by commercial aims, but by a lifelong commitment to protecting and restoring New Zealand’s native birds.
