Northland/Auckland
The Bay of Islands is a beautiful, culturally rich coastal region known for calm subtropical waters, while Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and the gateway to Waiheke Island’s relaxed, vineyard‑lined shores.
Northland
The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful and culturally important coastal regions, located in the far north of the North Island, about a 3–4 hour drive north of Auckland. It’s known for its calm, subtropical waters, lush green landscapes, and an archipelago of 144 islands scattered across a wide, sheltered bay.
The best way to experience the region is by private sailing charter, gliding between islands and stopping at secluded beaches, with frequent opportunities to encounter marine life — dolphins are especially common. Cruising also opens up a wide range of activities, from swimming and snorkeling in clear coastal waters to fishing, diving, paddleboarding, coastal hikes, sea biscuit rides, and jet skiing, striking an easy balance between relaxation and adventure.
The Bay of Islands is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, an event that shaped the relationship between Māori (Indigenous New Zealanders) and the British Crown and continues to influence New Zealand society today. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern nation and are a major cultural draw for visitors.
Just across the water is Russell, New Zealand’s first capital and one of its earliest European settlements. Russell’s historic waterfront buildings, churches, and cemeteries give visitors a window into the country’s early colonial period.
Auckland
Viaduct Harbour is Auckland’s most vibrant waterfront precinct, where the city meets the sea. Just steps from the central business district, the harbor is lined with waterfront restaurants, stylish bars, and cafés, all set against a backdrop of superyachts and marina views. By day, it’s a relaxed spot for harbor‑side walks and watching boats drift in and out; by night, it becomes one of Auckland’s liveliest dining and entertainment areas, with city lights reflecting across the water. The area is also a natural starting point for Hauraki Gulf Island ferries, making it an ideal base for exploring Auckland’s coastal lifestyle.
Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is Auckland’s most beloved Hauraki Gulf Island escape, offering a relaxed blend of world‑class wineries, golden beaches, and laid‑back coastal living—all just a 35–40 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. The island is best known for its award‑winning vineyards, many perched on hillside slopes with sweeping views over the Hauraki Gulf. Enjoy long vineyard lunches, tastings of renowned New Zealand wines, and a food scene focused on fresh, local produce. Beyond wine, Waiheke also boasts beautiful beaches, scenic coastal walks, boutique galleries, and a distinctly unhurried island pace that encourages visitors to slow down and unwind. Easy to reach Waiheke Island is a great option as a day trip or enjoy a few days to experience New Zealand’s wine, water, and relaxed outdoor lifestyle
